Continuing our series on one of Gartner’s latest flex reports is a look at how AI-powered HR can meaningfully improve the employee experience in your organization. Plenty of HR leaders have already recognized AI’s potential value. In fact, 61% are “[…]in the advanced stages of implementing generative AI[…]” compared to just 19% in 2023. 

So, will AI be the shake-up that HR needs? Can increased personalization really improve the employee experience? As Zensai’s Chief Human Success Officer, I feel it’s my responsibility to dive in and find out! 

AI’s role future in HR according to Gartner 

You can hardly scroll the internet these days without finding litanies of predictions about AI. Most aren’t worth the server space they’re hosted on, but Gartner stands out as a leading workplace analyst group. Their research is data-backed, based on insights from real people working with this technology today. So, what do they have to say?

AI agents will handle tier and tier 1 requests Gartner

Gartner predicts that AI will automate 50% of HR tasks by 2030, including tier 0 (self-service) and tier 1 (query response and simple functions). They also predict AI will augment 100% of HR tasks, so no aspect of your role will go entirely unchanged

As mentioned, nearly two thirds of HR leaders are overseeing advanced GenAI implementation. This number will likely rise, as 82% planned to deploy agentic AI in the following twelve months. 

Why you need to improve the employee experience 

Why should it be your top priority to improve the employee experience? Because these experiences encapsulate everything you go through as an employee, whether it’s your daily commute, the meetings you attend, or how you’re compensated. 

So, as you can imagine, it’s very important for long-term business success, as well as everyday employee engagement and wellbeing. Here’s a breakdown of its impact: 

Fostering employee buy-in through engagement

You need employee buy-in to make new policies or tools like AI successful. If you can improve employee experiences, you’ll drive engagement (which is abysmally low on a global scale) by giving your people reasons to be enthusiastic about their work.

Improve the employee experience by preventing burnout and turnover

Poor experiences contribute to employee stress, which eventually leads to burnout and turnover. For example, unreasonable deadlines or internal conflict may cause your team members to become disengaged. Without addressing these issues, you’ll end up replacing them all in due time.

Encouraging your people to do their best work

One way to improve the employee experience is by making sure you reward people for doing their best.  
 
When people have healthy, intrinsic motivation, it encourages them to go the extra mile (known in professional circles as “discretionary effort”). The only way to achieve this is to be a great employer, no shortcuts allowed.

There’s no point assigning the same courses to everyone. Essential training for one role might be completely useless to another. 

Personalized learning recommendations are a great way to use AI for employee experience improvement. AI can consider roles, performance data, and personal goals to recommend the best courses you have available. This encourages employees to learn proactively, instead of just waiting to be assigned training. 

2. Nudge automation for better development support

Besides simple tier 0 and 1 automation, you can set up AI nudges to prompt specific actions. It will then use pattern analysis to determine when to prompt. For example, if you normally submit an employee check-in every Friday, it might remind you on Thursday, then again towards the end of Friday if you still haven’t done it.

3. Role-based onboarding to support new hires

The first step to improve the employee experience is often to revamp onboarding processes. AI supports personalized onboarding by automating training assignments. It does this based on role profiles and talent mapping data provided by you, your learning management system, or performance management platform. 

For example, you might need to assign machinery operation training to people working on a manufacturing floor but assign data-handling training to those working in the factory office. 

4. Career development recommendations 

The typical management track isn’t for everyone, but at the same time, nobody likes to feel stuck in a dead-end job. AI can recommend opportunities your people may otherwise miss, like mentorships, secondments, or internal promotion openings. The more aware employees are of the opportunities you can offer, the less likely they are to feel they could do better elsewhere. 

You need AI to improve the employee experience efficiently 

Personalized but manual HR support might work when you’re a small start-up, but won’t be scalable as you grow. The closer you get to enterprise territory, the more you’ll need systems to automate everyday HR workflows and provide services like multilingual support. 

But AI personalization goes beyond that. It’s about providing timely, always-on support for individuals based on the latest information.
