An exclusive new study has revealed Google is the best company to work for in the UK, according to employee reviews.

Identifying the UK’s best company to work for

Employee engagement experts Zensai (formerly Weekly10) analyzed online Glassdoor reviews for 1,090 companies with employees in the UK to determine which are the best places to work. Companies included in the research have more than 1,000 reviews, 20 salary listings and 5 job openings.

The analysis of the best UK companies to work for took user ratings for each company across 13 different categories. These were weighted and added together to create an overall Employee Satisfaction Score out of 100. The categories assessed were:

  • salary
  • business outlook
  • recommendation to friends
  • approval of the CEO
  • ratings from different demographic groups
  • career opportunities
  • health benefits
  • financial benefits
  • flexible work hours
  • working from home
  • sick pay and vacation days
  • transportation benefits, and
  • miscellaneous benefits

Google is the best UK company to work for

Google was revealed as the best company to work for in the UK, with an impressive employee satisfaction score of 82.88 out of 100.

It scored 95.35 for career opportunities and 89.30 for salary – some of the highest scores in these categories, based on ratings from former and current employee feedback.

Google took the number one position as best UK company to work for as it also scores highly on sick pay and vacation system (87.86) and company flexible work hours and work from home policy (79.14).

The median yearly salary at Google is approximately £82,500.

Who makes up the top 5 best companies to work for in the UK

  • 2nd place – Salesforce
  • 3rd place – Morgan Stanley
  • 4th place – Deutsche Bank
  • 5th place – Cisco Systems

#2 – Salesforce

Achieving a satisfaction score of 81.28, Salesforce came in strong at second place. Although its median salary is lower than Google, it still sits at an impressive £73,566.

The main area which let it down was the business outlook experience score of just 63.51, indicating employees are less sure about its long-term stability. Salesforce’s main focus is customer relationship management software and applications focused on sales, customer service, and also marketing automation.

#3 – Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley ranked third best UK company to work for. Its satisfaction score, based on ratings of employee feedback is 79.61. The financial services company received 86.75 for approval of its CEO and has a median yearly salary of £67,658.

#4 – Deutsche Bank

Investment banking company, Deutsche Bank, ranked 4th with an overall satisfaction score of 79.29. It received an incredible 97.98 for its health benefits and 97.71 for its flexible hours, as well as 96 for sick pay and holiday.

It’s business outlook was lagging behind at 72.95 and median yearly salary sits at £73,002.

#5 – Cisco Systems

Just behind Deutsche Bank, Cisco Systems’ overall satisfaction score is 79.11. They scored much better for business outlook at 83.78, but their median yearly salary of £56,389 wasn’t enough to secure them a higher spot.

Salary still counts, but flexibility and personal development are key

Eight of the top ten best UK companies to work for fall in the financial and technology industries, with the remaining two being management consultants. Ratings six to ten include:

  • Dell Technologies – technology solutions
  • Accenture – management consultants
  • Bank of America – investment bank and financial services
  • Avanade – management consultants, and
  • Microsoft – technology solutions

So much information can now be found about first-hand experiences of current and former employees working in these UK companies. That’s why “sites like Glassdoor are an extremely valuable resource for those looking for new job opportunities”.

It’s also clear that “salary is an important factor. But many of the top UK companies to work for ranked highly for health benefits, sick pay, and flexible hours.

Work-life balance, including remote working, is extremely important when considering long-term employment options and the top companies are ranking highly in areas that contribute to this discussion.

They also notably share high approval for their CEOs. Consequently, all the top ten best companies to work for are scoring above 70 in this category.”
